Indian cinema has been making waves on the global stage, and the latest recognition comes in the form of an Oscar nomination for the song “Naatu Naatu” from the film RRR. The song, composed by M.M. Keeravaani and written by Chandrabose, has been nominated in the Best Original Song category at the 95th Academy Awards.
RRR is a 2022 Telugu-language epic action drama film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, who co-wrote the film with V. Vijayendra Prasad. The film features an ensemble cast including N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris. It tells the fictionalized story of two Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (played by N. T. Rama Rao Jr.), who fought against the British Raj.
The nomination for “Naatu Naatu” is a testament to the power of Indian music and the film’s ability to captivate audiences with its storytelling. The song is a celebration of the film’s rural setting and features traditional folk instruments, making it a unique and authentic addition to the film’s soundtrack.
This is not the first time an Indian film has been recognized by the Academy. In 2009, A.R. Rahman won two Oscars for his work on the film Slumdog Millionaire, and in 2018, the film Newton was India’s official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The nomination for “Naatu Naatu” is a proud moment for the Indian film industry and a reminder of the incredible talent and creativity present in the country’s music and cinema. The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 27, 2022, and all eyes will be on the ceremony to see if RRR can take home the coveted Oscar.
